Wings by Aprilynne Pike

by Tricia Lewis

Wings, a novel written by debut author Aprilynne Pike, is about a young girl, Laurel, who one day wakes up to find that she has a pair of fairy wings on her back. In a style similar to that of the bestselling Twilight books, Pike describes a fantastic coming of age story where the wings on Laurel are just one of her many concerns.

Laurel moves from the countryside to the big city and is forced to suddenly make friends in a school environment after being home-schooled her whole life. At school she meets David, a boy who is very caring and sensitive and understands when she describes that she has Wings to him. Romantic sparks start to fly between the two characters but things become complex when someone called Tamani walks into Laurel’s life. Tamani is another young fairy who tells Laurel why she was put on earth; to protect her parents’ original home, which is a gateway to the fairy homeland.

Laurel then faces a serious problem, and is torn between both future and past. With dependable David on one hand and exotic Tamani on the other, she has many choices to make.

This book is written primarily for young teenagers but really the beauty of it is that anyone can enjoy it. I was skeptical when I picked it up thinking that it would be just another Twilight knock-off but in fact it is so much more than that. The book is easy to read and will not be difficult for anyone over the age of twelve. A warning though: the book is hard to put down once you’ve started!
